With the smell of Backyard Burger in the air and the can't miss sound of the Chico Thunder Touchdown Band, the Kansas City Tribe christened their new home at Center High School with a 45-8 victory over a veteran Minnesota Vixen squad.

The Tribe's potent offense accumulated 488 yards on the night, capped off by five touchdown passes from QB, Jenny Schmidt. Rusty Sowers led the way with 169 total yards, rookie Regan Campbell had four receptions for 82 yards, and Brittany Fischer finished with 68 yards on three catches.

Sowers scored the first touchdown of the 2009 season on a ten yard reception from Schmidt. Schmidt then connected with Fischer during the next series for a 44 yard touchdown completion. Just before the end of the first quarter, Larisha Graves found her way into the endzone with a two yard run, to put the Tribe up 18-0.

At the beginning of the second quarter, all-purpose back, Megan Penrod, rushed for a six yard touchdown, and Amanda Sweeten kicked the PAT for a 25-0 lead. Later, in the first half, Schmidt threw a 25 yard completion to Regan Campbell for another score, with Sweeten again connecting on the point after, to make the halftime lead 32-0.

In the Tribe's first series of the second half, Schmidt found Sowers in the middle of the field for a 55 yard TD reception, to extend the lead to 38-0. Rookie Tegan Stuart accounted for the final score in the fourth quarter off a 30 yard pass from Schmidt, with Sweeten connecting on the PAT for a total of 45 points on the evening.

Defensively, the Tribe was all over the field, finishing with three sacks, three forced fumbles and a number of tackles for losses. The Vixens lone score occurred in the third quarter, on a short yardage gain up the middle.

Larisha Graves led the charge with ten tackles, followed by Layne Anonsen with seven. Both Megan Penrod and Mindy White added six tackles each.

Jersey Dinner 2009

On Friday, March 20, the women of the KC Tribe had the opportunity to trade in their shoulder pads and helmets for more formal wear and heels.

With nearly 70 in attendance, family and friends had their first opportunity to meet the players and coaches they will cheer for in the 2009 season.

Highlights of the evening included the announcement of the 2008 Captains (Layne Anonsen, Keke Blackmon, Megan Penrod, Christina Pinkley, Jenny Schmidt, and Rusty Sowers).

We would like to extend a special thanks to Manny's on the Boulevard and all the volunteers who made the night such a success!
